"This exhibition—consisting of rare bound books, costume accessories, and extraordinary textiles from LACMA’s permanent collection—focuses on a new acquisition, an exceedingly important folio of 190 colored engravings, Bonnart et Berain, Recueil des modes de la cour de France, dating from 1678-1693. Louis XIV (1643-1715) and his finance minister, Colbert, authorized fashion plates to promote French luxury goods and French culture. The images from the LACMA folio, which are among the first fashion plates, represent men and women from the court of Louis XIV as “trendsetters,” wearing the latest fashions and determining the most current taste in clothes."

![]() | I am preparing the catalog for the twice-yearly Whitaker Vintage Clothing & Textile Sale that will next be held March 31 to April 2nd in New Hope, PA. The sales are made up of consignments from museums, institutional collections and select estates and are usually attended by serious costume collectors, designers, vintage clothing dealers and museum curators. |
![]() | The spring sale will also include thousands of items that may be of major interest to its members. We have been selected by the Elizabeth Shroeder estate to sell her 50+ year textile, trim, button, buckle and beading collection in its entirety. |
![]() | I've tried to photograph as many of these items as possible before the sale but the sheer quantity only allows for a small sampling. |
![]() | The sales are spread over three days with the lots of most interest to this group probably at Session 3 - Saturday April 2nd. The full catalogue of all the sessions can be found at the website http://www.whitakerauction.com . Their are also twelve photo galleries with multiple close-ups of the pictured lots (Just click on the thumbnail images on the right). The lots that I think will be of most interest to this group will be in galleries six through nine. |
![]() | There will also be a Discovery Sale on Friday evening following the costume sale. This 200+ lot sale will move very fast selling large textile lots, including many gems. Most information can be found at the site but feel free to address any other questions directly to me. |
