Luxury Textiles East and West - LACMAThis 3 part exhibit "highlights more than 75 outstanding objects that demonstrate the role textiles play in relation to ceremonial occasions, public and private spaces, and social identity. Loscon Masquerade - Thanksgiving Weekend - Programming schedule now posted
Fifty Designers/Fifty Costumes: Concept to CharacterThe Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, in association with the Costume Designers Guild, presents a wonderful exhibit and lecture series. 50 costumes from movies of the last 5 years have been selected to showcase the designer. Included will be the character sketch and photographs and swatches. Movies represented include Spider-Man, Austin Powers, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Matrix II, Elf, Shaft, 102 Dalmatians, Legally Blond 2, The Last Samurai, Gladiator, Frida, and more.
Character Comes First: Costume Design in the 21th Century"This four-week seminar will offer a detailed look at the costume design process from the perspective of motion picture costume designers themselves. Each session will feature film clips and open discussion between audience and guests (subject to availability). During this program a renowned line up of costume designers will discuss their approach toward designing for particular motion picture genres." Each Tuesday is different topic: Period Costumes, Comedy or Fantasy Costumes, Contemporary Costumes, Science Fiction or Horror Costumes.
Past Patterns Historic Reproduction Clothing WorkshopsSaundra Ros Altman teaching Historic Reproduction Clothing Workshops. Each workshop includes an illustrated lecture, reproduction samples of the clothing to be made, kits with which to make the clothing. The workshops are in conjunction with the Boosters of Old Town at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. There are 4 different workshops on men's and women's clothing

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has a sizable group of costumes from the "Ballets Russes (Russian Ballet). Featured in this exhibition are thirty spectacular couture costumes created for opera singer Ganna Walska by the renowned fashion and graphic designer Erté. Twenty two ballet costumes designed by such artists as Henri Matisse, Natalia Goncharova, Sonia Delaunay, and Léon Bakst will also be presented. .... All the costumes and graphics, done during the late teens and 20s, are reflective of the period’s fascination with things “Oriental”—the fantasy, luxury, opulence, and exoticism Europeans found in the culture and arts from such distant lands as Persia, Russia, and China."

"The year 2003 marks the centennial of Korean immigration to the United States. To celebrate this important anniversary, Pacific Asia Museum is hosting a major exhibition of Korean costumes, from the National Folk Museum of Korea. Korean Costumes through the Ages will be the first exhibition of its kind in Southern California to trace the development of Korean dress, or hanbok, from the Three Kingdoms Period (1st century BC- AD 668) to the modern period."

Costume Gather - 2004 Come play with the Lord of the Ring Costume group for a loosely structured weekend of fun on Oscar weekend (the last weekend in February.)
We will have tours of the LA garment district and of the FIDM Movie costume display. Also join us for the evening parties that weekend that includes things from dinners, to a "hall of fire" Tolkien evening, a "lite" masquerade, and multiple Oscar Parties.

Costume AcademyThe Greater Bay Area Costumers Guild has just announced Costume Academy, a one day, multi-workshop event on Sunday, March 14th in Berkeley, Calif.. Basically, there are three time slots with three classes in each -- you take one class per time slot, so a total of three classes in one day.
The class topics include pattern drafting and draping, trimming (buttons, embroidery and ribbon flowers), hair pieces and ear prosthetics, Victorian practical and decorative pleating, and an overview on 18th c. quilted petticoats.
Should be excesses of fun -- cost is $45 members (inc. ICG members)/$50 non-members. Lots more info, include sign-up info, is available at:
