Scary Business - Haunted Houses

Turning yards into haunted houses and haunted cemeteries is a long time tradition in the Los Angeles area, especially with so many kids dreaming of growing up to be special effects artists in Hollywood.

Here we present a mix of yard haunts, and their cousins, the haunted theater, haunted bank, haunted vineyard, haunted storefront, etc.  Most of the yard haunts are just for a night or two at Halloween, but the bigger haunts give you a chance to explore Los Angeles all October for a chilling good scare of a time.

Spooky House - Haunted Theme Park

Spooky House abandoned move theatre,  Bloodshed Medical Center, Turbidite Manor. Face your fears at Phobia!  Famously large undertaking that setups for Halloween each year in the San Fernando Valley.  One of the biggest in Los Angeles every Halloween.

New Location this year!!!  New Nightclub. 3 all new attractions. Haunting since 1990. Only 4 miles from the old haunt.

Grimmstone Cemetery

Not meant to be a "scare".  Instead, it "shows you the spookyness that Halloween has to offer."  Good for all ages. Haunting the San Fernando Valley since 1985. 

If you haven't caught their haunt, do it now... after 20 years, they're closing their haunting gates. 2006 will be it's last year.

The Witecliff Road Haunted Manor

This years updates include an expanded pet cemetery and an electric chair with special effects. Expanded tunnel with things that jump and screen.  Strong strobe lights. Formally "the Van Noord Street Haunted House".

Call ahead on the weekend to arrange special not-so-scary tours.

Ghost Train in Travel Town

Playful Spooks invade the mini-trains ( 1/8 scale) at Griffith Park.  Evening rides feature 30 display around the track. Come ride a train!

 The Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum has been demonstrates railroads in miniature, 3 different gages, for almost 50 Years.  It has been haunting since 2001.  Checkout pictures from other years.

The Witch's Castle

  Mist swirls around the tombstones as thunder and lightning shatter the eerie stillness. You pass through a Gothic archway into the Witch's Realm, where skeletons speak, pumpkins fly, and the Witch herself is greeting visitors with treats....or tricks!

The people behind The Witch's Castle have been creating yard haunts for over 20 years individually and have now combined their talents and resources to haunt Studio City!

Vampmont Village

  Rotten Apple 907 presents Vampmont Village. We invite you to take a tour of our one of kind facilitates, where we provide care and therapy for the Immortal. We house the world’s craziest and frailest vampires, and there is nothing standing between you and them so we erg you to be cautious during your tour. 

Scare levels are adjustable for our younger victims... we mean visitors. At the Meyer Estate.  Haunting since 1984.

Stagecoach Inn Haunt

??? Shiver at the Haunting of the Old Grand Union Hotel.  This haunting fundraiser is at the Stagecoach Inn Museum (formerly the Grand Union Hotel) in Newbury Park (near Thousand Oaks). Built in 1876, it is an eerie location that still evokes wonderful Victorian memories. Hallowe'en is a natural for this old hotel on the original stage route from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles. Done up like a Halloween parlor party circa 1880 guides will be dressed in appropriate Victorian attire for the evening.

Join Kasey Rogers, the actress you may best remember as Louise Tate, the boss' wife on the old TV series Bewitched. Some friends, (including Dr. Bombay, Bernard Fox, Rose Marie from the Dick Van Dyke Show,  Oscar winner Margaret O'Brien), SueAne Langdon, Randal Malone and other friends that are getting together to form a truly spooky Victorian experience

This is the second year of haunting for this little museum. All proceeds go to benefit the historic site.

Scare the Children

A Studio City yard haunt that is mainly a graveyard scene, using props, many borrowed from  the Museum of Death.  Have a real antique Chinese coffin, tombstone, real flame torches and candelabras, fog machines & great lighting, voice processing and sound effects, and a human cast of characters all around the yard and seen thru the windows of the house, including: a gargoyle on the roof, a 6’7” tall “monster”, a ghoul, witches, zombies and various horned ghouls. It is both kinds of scary: eerie looking, and people-jumping-out-at-you shocking.  Haunting since 1998.

Fright Fair Haunted House & Harvest Festival

Factory of Nightmares - Four dimensions of fear, 4 haunts in one.  Bring your own flash light to investigate the Haunted Trail in the pitch black.

 Halloween Harvest Festival and Corn maze is open every day starting at 10am.  Family oriented.  Hayrides, rock climbing, petting zoo, pumpkin patch, kid activates, food, entertainment.

Annual Hollywood Cemetery Walking Tour

The Art Deco Society once again lead their  "celebrated tour of one of Old Hollywood’s most sought after "afterworld" addresses.  This gorgeous old site is the final resting place for a pantheon of performers, including Rudolph Valentino, Douglas Fairbanks, Barbara LaMarr, C.B. De Mille,—and other high-flying Angelenos—and as the elegant (and eclectic) collection of monuments and mausoleums attest, our forefathers died as stylishly as they lived.  Tour and tales!

STAR ECO Station

The award winning STAR ECO Station is an official wildlife rescue center as well as  an award winning educational center.  The rescued animals are there in a great environment that allows kids (or anyone) to get up close and personal with them.

An Alien Invasion / Nightmare on Beacon Street

 The annual Haunted House sponsored by the Beacon House Association of San Pedro and produced by the residents and staff of Beacon House. This year an alien ship has crashed into the Beacon House. They will leave you screaming for more.

As well as a maze, the event features a street fair for the entire family.  Food, games, prizes, vendors, contests, dancing, kareoke and other activities

The Realm of Terror Haunted Maze

??? A yard haunt and maze.  Over 1500 square feet of haunt.  Doing their "greatest hits".  Low gore, acceptable for all ages. Haunting since 2000.

Haunted Space Station

 "Due to staff being eaten...I mean staff cutbacks...we are taking anyone who is willing to go for interplanetary travel. ...

"Destination will be a habitable moon of Saturn, with awesome views of Saturn from the wind-swept surface where there is strange plant life studded with huge glowing crystals. The alien "animal" life seems friendly enough. They even have a book called "How To Serve Man". ..." (see their website for the rest of the story.)

Theatre 68's Haunted House

  The 68 Cent Crew Theater Company has transformed its space on Sunset Boulevard into a haven for ghouls, goblins and ghosts.  Anyone who dares is invited to enjoy a chilling tour through a “graveyard” and into a haunted house of otherworldly proportions.   Those who venture through will be met by many not-so-restful souls brought to life by actors from the theater company.

A maze to scare the living s*%$ out of you. Satan's chop shop is designed by Hollywood movie artists and actually makes you feel in the environment, from the intestines on the walls to the live chainsaws of Satan's demented minions.

George Newnam's Casa de Calaveras - House of Skeletons

The Hispanic Arts Council of The Bowers Museum of Cultural Art celebrates  El Dia de los Muertos. View George Newnam's 3rd annual display of life-size Skeletons in the Casa de Calaveras - House of Skeletons special exhibit. --  A visual narrative of installations chronicling the spiritual journey of Jose and Gloria Calavera during Mexico's El Dia de Los Muertos, The Day of the Dead.  An educational, multi-cultural walk-through attraction featuring life-size fully dressed skeleton figures aided by black lighting, props and music.

Enjoy live entertainment by Fiesta Ballet Folklorico, singers Sonido Mexico and Saddleback High School Guitar Club; take part in children's face painting and sugar skulls celebration of Dia de los Muertos. The Terry Haunt

The family that Haunts together, ah... has a lot of fun together.  They've been converting their garage since 1997 creating a great neighborhood block party.  No fee.  Refreshments are available on a first come, first served basis. As always, eyeballs are steamed, not fried.  This year - "Klowns -- Do you dare?"

Tustin Haunt

This year's FREE haunt will be themed "A Pirate's Death for Me." Portions exhibited will be an old pub, a wharf with a moored boat to walk through, a cursed jungle, and a spider-infested cave - and of course a load of Pirate Booty (treasure) at the end. Haunting at this location since 2003

Haunted Maze in Buena Park

Ellison Haunt - St. Hallentine's Day Massacre

??? Gangland Ghosts of Old Chicago. Ghostly gangsters, murdering mobsters and crooked cops are just a few of Chicago's finest souls waiting to take you on a tour.   Haunting since 1994.

Nightmares and Beyond

 Multi-room haunt.  Alien room, Mothman room, the horrors of Rosemary's baby, Michael Myers, Freddy, Jason, haunted illusions, floating monsters.  The dead will come alive.  Haunting in Mission Viejo since 1996.

Haunted Trails - City of Laguna Niguel

 An escorted tour though a carnival of tens featuring clowns and other creepy creatures.    Haunting since 2001.

Haunt Hotel

 The Haunt Hotel includes a graveyard, caretakers house and the Haunt Hotel.

The hotel has been known to have intermittent problems with the lights and air. Lights may flicker, chains may rattle, plates may fly, the undead may rise, fog may appear and the spirits may appear at any time.

The Haunt Hotel is designed for all ages - and has been created by a former Disney Studio employee and friends to give you a fun and entertaining evening - with just a hint of haunt.

Maze of Mayhem

 This is a haunted maze created by the Clements family.  This year's theme is horror movies.  It is a short self guided tour.  Haunting since 2003.

Boot Hill

  An elaborate yard display in Irvine, BOOT HILL rises from the fog.  The unearthly spirits from the old west town of Bridgewood will materialize for four short nights, transforming the residence at 16 Goldenrod into the old church and cemetery that once occupied the land.  Come if you dare...but beware the ghost of Jedediah Smith, he has been known to roam through the decaying grounds of Boot Hill.

The Haunted Vineyard

While this haunted "house" has been going only since 2001, the builders have lots of experience in special effects and haunting.  The haunt is built in a mix of buildings, some more than 100 years old... so the standard feel of you "knowing" it's just plywood is missing, because sometimes, you're in the real thing.  Small groups go though unescorted, never knowing what to expect next because they change the show.

The  rural atmosphere, combined with the frightening special effects  blend seamlessly to fully submerse our visitors into a world of terror. A high horror, low gore attraction.  
 

Night of Terror at Columbia Point

This year's theme: the Haunted Circus.  Warning to parents... there will be clowns, scary clowns!  Free.  Haunting since 1990.

Saint Lucifer's Haunted Hospital of Lost Hope

Once you check-in, you'll die to check out!  Tour a hospital possessed by evil and operated by fear.  Live operation, psycho ward, witness an autopsy.

Zombie Escape - OLA Haunted House

 Our Lady of The Assumption Church Presents The OLA Haunted House.  "The dead have begun rising from the grave, returning with an insatiable desire for "fresh meat." You and your group, along with your military escort, must make your way through the zombie infested areas that lie between you and safety"

Hallowed Haunting Grounds

 This is a  wonderful home based haunting based on mystery not shock. They haunted for 32 years.  2005 was their last year. 

This was one of the best private haunts around.  The Studio City house was transformed into a grave yard with Hollywood magic effects. Quite a number of eerie special effects different than the standard fright house.  OK for all ages.  Their website still exists with loads of pictures and lots of history.

Ultimate Nightmares Scream Park

 Closed for 2006, may open again in 2007 with a new location

3 attractions at one location. Doubled in size this year, all new attractions. Haunted house and Code Blue are rated to scary for kids under 7.  3-D chaos is for all ages.  Haunted house will be open rain or shine.  Other events depend on the weather.  Haunting since 1995

Scareplex at Fairplex

Second year for this event. It's run by the same folks that run the Queen Mary Shipwreck.  This ran 2 years 2004-2005 only.

"A full night of fright as you make your way through four horrifying mazes. Put on your 3D glasses and risk the wrath of the "Reapers Revenge" in 3D. Up on haunted hill sits "Mayhem Manor" and the residents are dying to see you. Brave the grave as you travel through "Massacre Mountain" up on the glade. Escape evil as you explore "Voodoo Village" down below." Club Chupacabre, an all ages dance club, features special events, an elevated center dance stage and live DJ.

Unlike it's big brother at the Queen Mary, all ages are allowed.

Thousand Oaks Haunted House

Two attractions - the Circus of Screams - beware of the black big top, a 28 room & Haunted House. Beware of the clowns and other ghostly beings.
